I go to an unusual school

English Writing Project:

I go to an unusual school. This school is called The Liger Learning Center. It is located in Phnom Penh. The goal of the school is to provide education to children with potential to help develop Cambodia. The reason this school is different is it provides scholarships to 50 students so they can get a better education. The students were selected from different parts of Cambodia and are some of the smartest students in the country. Even though we all came from different places, we can all live together as a family. We all identify as Liger students, having a big goal of making change in Cambodia. It isn’t easy to stay and share knowledge with people that you barely know for most of the school term. The school also provides sleeping place for provincial students. There are some essential subjects that students are focusing on, which are Math, Literacy, Khmer, Exploration, Expertise and STEM. All the subjects that we learn are in English except Khmer. I like this school because it is unique. It gives me the opportunity of learning about my own country by researching and exploring but if I went to a government school there would be less opportunity.

How learning in Liger help me to change Cambodia?

Sopor

For this whole year the class that made I think I had changed Cambodia is Exploration because we can go to meet other people and interview them about their problems and try to give them solution of take that problem to learn more about it and post the idea in our Exploration blog. The class that made me think I had change Cambodia is Waste Water Sanitation because when our group did the presentation on Science Fair people keep asking about how to the build wetland and how to use it. The reason that I think I had change Cambodia because wetland is a type of system to treat the water so we can recharge the water back into the water system without any effect as you can see if you live in Cambodia most of the water resources had been poluted my human waste. Also when people interest about it that means they care about the environment. I also think Entrapenaur class made me think I had change Cambodia because it the class that make the student think about how to open business with their own idea. It also help us to think more a about leader ship and what can the leader suppose to do so it can make benefit to all the people.

write a summary of the article from Newsela

Topic : Health

Lexile Level: 700

In this article was about different opinions of scientist and professor about gaming especially about violent games. The old scientists said that when the kids playing violent game it them make them bully and they not paying attention to class very well. Unfortunately the young professor and some other scientists said that it not bad at all. They said that the kids that playing a lot of video game mostly thinner than other kids also they not overweight because they so busy and focus with their game. The scientist had mention about evil character they said that when the kid play the evil character they feel bad about themselves and make don’t want to bullying anyone. there are some kids had said that video game make them think of different ideas, focus more it class just like they focus in game and make them have a long memory.

Favorite part: I found it interesting because mostly people always said that game always bad for kid unless it the learning game but this article they mention about video game and they list all the benefit that i never heard before.

I would like to recommend this article to the parents some of the parents thought that video for kids.

Number of Students:10 students

Days we meet: Thursday and Friday

Advanced Enrichment Dates: Session 3 Oct. 20 – Jan. 16

Course Description: In Anatomy class we learned about Excretory System (kidney & bladder), Muscular System (muscles) and Skin. Also we all made one presentation each to share in our class and it was about what we learned in the whole Anatomy class. We spent two weeks to do that presentation. That worked really well and everyone wrote a lot of things. We also learned about other things too. One day we learned how to use the microscope. We took fingernails or hair to practice on microscope. We tried to put any things strange like saliva and it was very surprised for us because it looked like two different things. We had some games to play and it was about muscles because we wanted to know more about different types of muscles and how to protect that muscles and to make it stronger. The muscle is help us move. Our body has 360 muscles. We also learned about skin. The skin is the largest organ in human’s body. It weighs about 5 kg andit has three layers. When the end of our class we did a test about what we had been learning before.

Botany Description

Name of Course: Botany 2

Learning Facilitator: Jojo

Number of Students: 9

Dates: October 20-January 16

Days we Meet: Thursday-Friday

Course Description:In our Advanced Enrichment we learned about Botany. Botany means the study of plants. Plants are the only organisms that can make their own food and that’s called sugar or glucose. The process of plants make their food is called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis means plants take sunlight to make their own food. Plants make photosynthesis on the leaves. The organ in leaves works to make the food. In leaves have chloroplast and in chloroplast have chlorophyll. Plants take the carbon dioxide and lay out oxygen. During the day, they do photosynthesis. Plants have physical features. There are: roots, stem, leaves, fruits and flowers. In the stem there are two tubes. First tube is for sucking the food or it’s called nutrients and the second tube is for sucking the water. In our class we had the activity is growing the plants. Our resources were paper, plastic bag, water and seed. First we needed to soak paper with water but not very wet and put the seed in it. Rub it not too tight and put in plastic bag. The plastic bag needed to be open for oxygen get in it and put at the place that have a sunlight. We need to put the water, unless the paper is dry. When the seed germinates like come out the stem, leaves, we take out from the paper and put in the soil.

Robotics Description

Name of Course: Robotics 3

Learning Facilitator: Max

Number of Students: 9

Days we Meet: Monday/Tuesday

Advanced Enrichment Dates: March 30- June 12

Course Description: In Robotics we did many things about programming the robots and also to build the robots by the legos. First we studied how to build the robots by the legos. So we divided into the group of two then we started to build the robots. We built the lego robots by following the instructions the first time. When we finished building the robots we started to study how to program the robots. When we knew about the basic of build and program robot we started to do the challenges with the programming by using the robots to follow the line. When we finished that challenge we also did the other challenges too. Then we took off all the shapes out from the robots and we started  building the new shapes to make it stronger. We made whatever that we wanted. We did like that because we wanted to do the competition with each other. This competition if we wanted to win we had to make our robots stronger and when we went into the circle we tried to made the other robots go out the circles.

Name of Course: Anatomy 1

Learning Facilitator: Jo

Number of Students: 12 students

Days We meet: August 12 – October 17

Course Description: In this Advanced Enrichment we learned about body. Our bodies have four systems: Skeletal system (bones), Digestive system (stomach), Respiratory system (lungs), Circulatory system (heart). We watched the video about people’s bodies. The digestive system is the system that help to break down the food and take the nutrients from the food and take the waste out of body. Digestive system is very important for our body because it helpsyou to break down the food into small pieces. The skeletal system is also important in our body because if you break the bones you will have a big problem. You have to go to the hospital and tell the doctor what is the problem. We also did the presentation for people to listen because we want people to take care of their health. In our group we shared into four teams and one team had three people. We had to share our position in the group: one was patient and two were nurse and doctor. We presented four things and they wereSkeletal system, Digestive system, Respiratory system and Circulatory system. People usedsome clothes to wear when they were acting. We watched the videos and read the books to find information.

Algebra Description

Name of Course: Algebra A

Learning Facilitator: Jeff Boucher

Number of Students: 14

Dates: August 12 – January 16

Days we Meet: Monday – Tuesday

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment we learned about Math. This Advanced Enrichment lasted really long and the students had a really hard time working on that. We learned the hard math by learning it step by step. There are many clever students in this class and all of them are very patient. Every day in our class the math got harder and harder but we got smarter as the time kept going. Sometimes we realized that the math that we had learned could be used in real life. The important things that we learned for the whole year were negative numbers, the Greatest Common Factors, linear equations, y=mx+b form or Slope-interception, parabolas, Quadratic formula/equation, etc. All of these math sections were very hard. It is something that people will think that it is hard because they did not try yet and for those people who try they will think it is easy. But for us here we do not think it was hard or easy we were just trying our best.

Biography Description

Exploration Name: Biography

Exploration Dates: August 12-September 26

Essential Questions:

(1) What is a biography?

(2) What events have shaped this person’s life?

Number of Students: 13

Description: The first day that we started to learn our Exploration everyone was very excited. Our Exploration studied with teacher Jo, Sambath and Channa. Our Exploration learned about Biography. Biography is studying about the other person’s life. Biography group worked together and shared ideas that we had. For example: we went on a trip and searched the information in computer. When we interviewed we used the strategy to understand about the other person’s life like listening strategy, asking questions and interviewing. We learned how to interview the people, by writing down the notes, how to be a good photographer and a good questionnaire. When we interviewed the people already we not just write down notes in our book. We also learned to make a documentary in the iMovie program. Some people worked on the information that they got too but they did it in Powerpoint program. The reason we wanted to do like this because in the future if we forget what we have we can look in the documentary of the other people life. The people that we interviewed were:Sophal’s uncle (the older person and now he does not do anything because his leg is hurt), Sophal’s sister-in-law (now she not do anything but she works at her house), Sophal  (works in Liger cleaning the school), Simian (works in Liger cleaning the school) and Houy (also works at cleaning Liger too). We had many different people that we interviewed but we only give example some of the people. We took the trip to go to the pagoda near our school to interview the monks in that pagoda. It was so fun for the Biography group. Our group studied only six weeks. Every day during Exploration time the students worked hard and studied new things a lot. In this Exploration all of the students are not lazy, they are active and helpful. We all were really happy to study about biography and now help us have a knowledge and a lot of the experience that we thought.
