Model United Nations allows students to understand how United Nations maintains international orders and the world-issues.
After three conferences, I applied to be a Deputy Chair (DC) for Phnom Penh International School Model United Nations and I got accepted to be a DC in General Assembly 1, which is a committee focusing on “Disarmament and International Security.”
Chairs are students to maintain the order and formality of the committees. I personally think that being a chair, we need to acknowledge the complication to those questions and understand that each issue doesn’t have a wrong and a right solution and understand that there are many different perspectives on every issue. Being an effective chair requires the ability to see and understand situations where delegates are uncomfortable or off-topic, and be able to advise them without confronting them with their mistake. The chair must be professional and have a sense of humor and be approachable, firm and fair. Having comprehensive knowledge about the topics and it is important that the atmosphere within the committee is safe for delegates to take risks delivering speeches and debating controversial issues. But most importantly being a chair is to help all the delegates to get involved.
As chairs, we need to write reports on the questions that will be debated on in their assembly, so delegates will know where to get started with their research. In my case as a DC, I wrote a report on the question of “The Role of Resilient Healthcare in Global Security.” Which is about Resilient healthcare systems, an organized system, for the world to quickly react prior to, during or following situations such as: warfare, natural disasters, and climate change, or epidemics and pandemics. In the goal of preventing the spreading of illness, protecting the global population and life expectancy, medical research for cures to epidemics and pandemics, working toward health, peace, and security of the world to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In a general idea, being a chair needs to understand the topic more in-depth than any other delegates, in order to assist them in writing a resolution.
During the 20th-22nd of October conference, I personally worked with the delegate of France, the main submitter of the resolution, on helping to improve the resolution by asking probing questions and hinting out where is need to be improved. And as the result, this particular resolution was picked to be one out of three resolutions to be debated on at the Plenary Session. Which is when all delegates and chairs from all committee in the MUN conference came and debated on the resolution together.
On the 17th and 18th of March, 2017, a group of eights students traveled to Vietnam for our first international Model United Nations (MUN) conference hosted by Renaissance International School of Saigon. We were all the delegation of Kingdom of Sweden, but we were in different committees. I represented Sweden in the Security Council (SC), personally I found it’s challenging to do research as this is the second times that Sweden becomes the members of the SC. But with substantial researching and the helps from Swedish government, I was able to get information needed to represent Sweden accurately.
Being a delegate in SC was a totally new experience, I was shocked at first because I did not aware about having different procedure. Fortunately other delegates were helping and explaining that in SC we’re debating clause by clause, and that for writing resolution, we will have a main submitter of each clause; instead of a resolution as a whole. Furthermore, delegates in SC are more aggressive than in other committees, each delegate has a lot of experiences and everyone follows and understands each other’s position. It is harder to get a resolution to pass in SC because of veto power. As the P5 members (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and United States) and what was challenging s that one of the topics is “The question of revising the membership and veto power”
Attending MUN makes me become a more open minded person, I understand that there are many different perspectives on every issue and this helps me to become a better listener and accepting others’ ideas.
Independent Discovery is an opportunity that the students get during school time to learn about the topic they like or want to be good at. I had been working on the art projects for my independent for this past three terms (August 12th until February 3rd). But I did this project like 2 hours a week. I draw some different types of art. The point for this art learning is to archive my own goal as a fashion designer. Within this time I had been researching on the internet about different type of art and art supply.
On 23rd to 25th of October, we had a group of 10 students from the Liger Learning Center joined the ISPP Model United Nations (MUN). It is our first time and we had four days to prepare for the MUN. So we each got a country to represent and my country is Yemen. I found a hard time to do this because we had three topics to state in the conference which are Gender Equality, Animal’s Rights and Protection and preservation of global marine life. The process of this conference is: first we need to come up with a policy statement which raise about one of the topic, then we joined with the other delegate who had the same topic and tried to come up with a resolution. The last event is to debate is the resolution should be pass or not.
